Project Proposal for Open Call – CDA-Projects Grant for Artistic Research and Production 26.10.2011
I am Alphan Vardarlı a philosopher and artist from İstanbul, Turkey. My project involves the diciplines of biology, mathemathics, statistics and genetics. I would like to build a database containing the images, sounds,electric activities and DNA of a thousand types of life forms living in symbiosis. I would then programme that database to guess the DNA of a 1001th life form by only giving the image, sound and electrical activity. If I could get an accurate enough guess, then I would use the same algorithm to produce an image from my own DNA, body sounds and electrical activity.
So the result of project is a portrait of mine processed soley from my DNA, body sounds and electrical activity which I would like to exhibit next to a recent photo of myself. There are candidates for 1000 types of life forms living in symbiosis, such as the mouth flora which is well documented or the dairy industry; with a grant and an institution involved I hope to contact third parties that contain parts of this data and get it together.
Then there would be the cost of the statistical and possibility calculations, the storage and processing requirements and finally the costs of documenting my DNA, body sounds and electrical activity. I plan to work with people on a voluntary basis and form warm relations for this project.

“Researchers at the University of Maryland Institute for Advanced Computer Studies (UMIACS) partnered with a scientist at the National Information Communications Technology Research Centre of Excellence in Australia (NICTA) to develop robotic systems that are able to teach themselves. Specifically, these robots are able to learn the intricate grasping and manipulation movements required for cooking by watching online cooking videos. The key breakthrough is that the robots can “think” for themselves, determining the best combination of observed motions that will allow them to efficiently accomplish a given task.”
What would a self-conscious machine’s reflection be in a new city? Where would it refer to and how? How would it form data about its surroundings and how would it process it? What kind of a syntax could be formed with the raw and processed data?
I plan to carry the eye of the AI (the android), a time lapse camera through the streets of a city at daytime for 5 hours a day at different locations and set it to take a picture of what I am looking at every 15 minutes as well as recording the GPS coordinates at the time. After a week’s work I will search each and every picture that has been taken by the time lapse camera on the internet (Google image search or Baidu image search) and register the following;
1) Every image that has been captured by the time lapse camera and its location
2) The first 10 images that come up in the internet search will be saved in the order they come up
3) The file names of the searched images
4) The tags of the searched images and the immediate text for the image
5) The location of the image or where it was posted from
6) The 25th, 50th, 100th and the 150th image that come up in the search will also be saved together with the file name and tag info
I plan to make a presentation of all this data on boards designated for each day showing the images taken and the images that come up in the searches ordered by most similar to distant images in proximity with the tag and text that comes up for each image.
I also will put the findings on a website, forming a tag cloud and identifying recurring images that come up in the searches and determine the most proximate and distant images in relation to location.
By setting up an analysis, an investigation of raw data by treating the internet as a processor, as the brain of the AI (the android) I will try and make visible what appears invisible; the logic in which AI would see and categorize and hence its modus-operands for relating to surroundings.

Kendi kendimize karaladığımız ve hoşumuza giden küçük küçük imgeler, insanın varlığını sabitleyebildiği ve toparlanıp odaklayabildiği alanlar açabiliyor. Benim ilgilendiğim karalamaların ortaya çıktığı anların dürüstlüğünü ve kişisel estetiğini bir sürece ve seyirci ilişkisine taşıyabilmek.
Naz, toplumsal beklentiler ve varoluş arasında sıkışmaya ve de sistematik bir izsizleştirmeye incelerek direnir. Kaligrafi fırçaları ve çini mürekkebi ile yaptığım bu seride direniş ve varoluş üzerine soyut çalışmalar yer alıyor.
Sunum panoları, fotokopi kağıtları ve paket kağıtlarının üzerinde resmi ve gayri resmi ilişkiler ve kopukluklar beliriyor, imzalanıyor mühürlenip açılıyor. Takip ve tekrar içerisinde, beyaz üzerine siyah ile çizgi ve lekelerle kurduğum dünyamı izleyiciye açıyorum.

Little images we scribble to ourselves, can open areas where a person can establish his existence and get oneself together to focus. What I am interested here is to carry the honesty and the personal aesthetics of those moments to a process and a viewer relation.
Coyness resists being congested between social expectations and existence and a systematic cluelessness by appearing more refined. In this series, which I produced with calligraphy brushes and Indian ink, there are abstract works on resistance and existence.
On the office white surfaces of presentation boards and photocopy papers and upon the soft brown of wrapping papers, official and unofficial relations and non relations appear, get signed, sealed and opened. I am opening up my world to the viewers, which I have set up within pursuit and repetition, with black on white, with line and stain.

Karalama : 1 karalamak eylemi. 2 el alıştırmak için yinelene yinelene yazılan yazı. 3 bir yazının, üstünde düzeltmeler yapılan, temize çekilmemiş taslağı. 4 kara çalma, leke sürme, suç yükleme. (A. Püsküllüoğlu, Türkçe Sözlük, Yapı Kredi Yayınları, 1995)
Benim için çok özel bir dünyaya bir gezinti çizdiklerim. Elimi ve hayal gücümü olabildiğince serbest bırakıp, çoğu zaman müziğe kapılıyor ve düzeltmeye silip bozmaya gitmeksizin, sonsuz bir tekrar içinde ittiğim çizgiyi takip ediyorum. Bu sürekliliğin içinde, tekrarlayarak incelen bir estetikte, kendi dilimi bulmaya çalışıyorum. İçlerinde bir alfabe saklı gibi duran sayfalarda bu bazen bir bütünlüğe ulaşıyor; resimleşiyor.
Defterleri matbaalarda kullanılan kitap maketleri oluşturuyor.
Kullandığım markörler ise edding, artline ve de yoken.
